Arrest Made in 2017 Paulding Murder

Damon Sherod Hamilton(Paulding County, GA) On January 13, 2017, at approximately 12:39 AM, Paulding Deputies responded to 553 Crestbend Lane Powder Springs, GA, which is in unincorporated Paulding County, reference a shooting/burglary. On the above date Mark Phillips (B/M, 34 YOA), along with his wife and children, arrived home to their residence which is in the Crestworth Crossing Subdivision. As soon as the family walked in the door, violence erupted in the foyer. Phillips was immediately attacked by men who were already inside the home waiting on him to arrive. During the altercation, Phillips was fatally shot to death and the suspects fled on foot. Fortunately, none of his family members were injured during the incident.
Although Detectives and Agents have been working this case since its occurrence, it had gone cold and there were no viable leads. However, as a result of a combined investigation between Detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), some new leads were developed. Through an exhaustive amount of hours and diligent investigative work, Sheriff Gary Gulledge would like to announce that there has been an arrest made in this case.
On August 12, 2019 Detectives and Agents secured arrest warrants on Damon Sherod Hamilton, (B/M, 31 YOA) of Lithonia, GA who is also a confirmed member of a criminal street gang within the State of Georgia. Once the warrants were secured, Deputy Marshals with the United States Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFT) arrested Hamilton in Forest Park, GA. Hamilton was transported back to Paulding County and is currently being held in the Paulding County Jail with no bond. He has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Murder (F)
  • Aggravated Assault (F)
  • Burglary (F)
  • Violation of the Georgia Gang Act (F)

Sheriff Gary Gulledge stated, “I am pleased that our Detectives and GBI Agents have not given up on this case. We will continue our investigation into this incident and we expect more arrests in the future. I hope that Mrs. Phillips will have some closure knowing that one of the men responsible for her husband’s death is in jail.”
