KimberlyAlexander600House Resolution 1093, "The Study Committee on Mental Illness," Passes Georgia General Assembly, Awaits Governor's Signature.
On the last night (DAY 40), of the 2016 legislative session, House Resolution 1093, "The Study Committee on Mental Illness", sponsored by State Rep. Kimberly Alexander (D-Hiram), passed in the Georgia General Assembly.
Under this bill, a House Study Committee is created, consisting of five members of the House of Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House.
"I am elated to have witnessed the achievement of this important legislation which includes bi-partisan support of my colleagues in the House," said Rep. Alexander. "Mental Illness is a forgotten population (349,000 adults and about 111,000 children) living with serious mental health conditions in Georgia. These individuals deserve attention and appropriate care yet a large percentage of mental ill are ending up in our jails and hospitals.”
This Study Committee will consider efforts in treating and supporting mentally illness related to community based supportive housing, residential mental health facilities, and examining county and municipality infrastructures inclusive of residential and congregate care housing option. Additionally, research indicates that when mental illness is treated appropriately with medication and supervision, patients can lead productive lives. “This is what all of us want for the mental ill,” said Rep. Alexander.
