Under the Gold Dome…a Message from Rep. Micah Gravley

gravley315Monday, January 14, I was sworn in to represent the values we hold dear in West Georgia. I want to sincerely thank the citizens of House District 67 for the incredible honor of serving you and your families. I am humbled by the continued support of so many of my friends, supporters, and family members in both Douglas and Paulding Counties. I am honored by your support and ask for your steadfast prayers as we work together on behalf of our home community and our beloved Georgia.

Governor's Inauguration
The inauguration of Georgia’s 83rd governor, Brian Kemp, was marked by thousands who made their way to Atlanta to celebrate our new leadership. Kemp encouraged us to continue to build on our state’s accomplishments, while calling for a “state united,” regardless of party politics. Other officers taking the oath of office include the Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Superintendent, Insurance Commissioner, and Agriculture Commissioner. We look forward to their leadership over the next four years!

State of the State
Thursday, January 17, Governor Kemp made his first State of the State address before a joint session in the House chamber. The Governor highlighted all we have accomplished for the good our state in recent years while setting forth goals for the future.
Under Republican leadership, Georgia has become the epicenter of job growth, the Hollywood of the South and will soon become the Cyber Capital of the World. However, there is much work to be done. Among his initiatives, Gov. Kemp announced plans for the Georgians First Commission, which will be tasked with reviewing regulations that make it difficult for companies to hire, expand and invest in our state. Kemp also discussed his budget priorities for improvement within the education, public safety, and healthcare sectors.
Today marks the first day of "Budget week." The Appropriation Committee will be reviewing the Governor’s proposed budget, which includes a $3000 pay raise for our hardworking teachers. We will bring you a full update on budget proposals in the coming week.

Budget Week
The only constitutional task required by the General Assembly during any given session is that of a balanced budget. House Appropriation Committee members will be hard at work over the next few days vetting Governor Kemp's proposed 2020 FY budget. They will also be amending the 2019 FY budget to reflect changes and discrepancies between predicted revenue and actual revenue. Next week, we will bring you a full review of budget items and expected allocation for our region of the state and beyond.

Committee Assignments
The beginning of each new term also brings brand new committee assignments for those elected to serve. I am honored to have been appointed by Speaker Ralston and House Leadership to serve on the following committees: Appropriations Full Committee, Judiciary Non-Civil (Secretary),Public Safety & Homeland (Secretary), Public Safety Subcommittee of Appropriations, Juvenile Justice, Ethics, Science & Technology, Economic Development & Tourism, Government Affairs.

Low THC Medical Oil Commission Update
During the off-session season, I had the pleasure of serving as House Chairman of the Low THC Oil Expansion committee. We were tasked with researching ways to effectively and safely expand this medicine for patients in Georgia suffering from debilitating conditions. I will be updating you throughout session on all efforts and legislation brought forth. It has been a LONG four years since this issue was introduced in the House by my friend, former Rep. Allen Peake. We have accomplished so much over the last few years as evident by the approved study commission. You may review meeting minutes and our final report on the General Assembly website under study committees.
As we make our way through the legislative session, be on the lookout for updates on the latest issues. With an aggressive agenda ahead, I look forward to working with my colleagues in passing conservative, principled legislation for the betterment of our state and district. Again, thank you for the honor and privilege of allowing me the opportunity to serve as your voice under the Gold Dome and if you need anything at all, feel free to contact me anytime.
