One way to beat the Winter Blues this time of year is to begin a new hobby. Among the many activities that the Paulding Co. Senior/Community Center offers is a weekly art class which began in September 2009 with instructor Jackie Hill. The class meets on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 AM at 54 Industrial Way in Dallas at the community center which is directly across from the sheriff's office.

The classes are $10 each which includes all materials. Since students are given one-on-one instruction, all levels of ability from beginner to advanced can benefit. Most students come to their first class thinking they have no talent and then discover that they can really make something beautiful! Students usually work on projects of their own choosing, but periodically the class works on a group project with each student working on the same thing. Some of the projects have included: pets; still life such as flowers, tomatoes, Mason jars; an antique chair; turkeys; a pastoral landscape with sheep; a beach scene, and many others. Ms. Hill states that many of her students find the classes therapeutic and something they look forward to doing, a fun time that relieves the stresses from their lives.

While the classes are serious, they are also very fun and the students are "like family" to each other. Some members of the class have been attending since the very first day back in 2009 and have excelled in their abilities, and others have recently joined finding new friends and a great new creative outlet. The class also has a Christmas party every year as well as other fun social activities. Ms. Hill also teaches a children's class at Taylor Farm Park on Wednesday afternoons.
