On April 9, 2016 Members of the Gen William J. Hardee Camp # 1397 Sons of Confederate Veterans of Dallas, Georgia met to mark the grave sites of over 600 known Confederate Soldiers in Paulding County with a Confederate flag. This project by the Hardee Camp each year is in honor of Confederate Memorial Day which is observed every April 26th. We have records that show one out of four men who served from Paulding County died during the war and we have the names of over 300 hundred of these men, many more men died shortly after the war from wounds and disease. Per the 1860 Paulding County census there were 7,038 people living in the County at that time, from May 24, till June 4, 1864 there were more people in Paulding County then lives here today, the Confederate Army with over 70,000 men and the Federal Army with over 110,000 men marched into our County, the Federal Army because they were off their supply line of the Western & Atlantic Railroad lived off our families taking all valuables and food, and destroying what they could not use. Paulding County was devastated by the fighting and occupation of both armies. This May will be the 152nd Anniversary of the Battles of New Hope Church, Picketts Mill and Dallas here in Paulding County.
